Shavathon 2008
Working to prevent and treat cancer is a national imperative, as it impacts almost one in four South Africans. Nedbank was therefore proud to once again lend its support to Shavathon 2008. This is the fifth time that the Shavathon, a CANSA national fundraiser, has been run in South Africa, and Nedbank has been fully committed to the cause each time.
Shavathon 2008 took place on 15 and 16 February, and hundreds of Nedbank staffmembers from all over the country participated by spraying or shaving their heads for this great cause. More than R5 million was raised through this exceptional initiative and the funds will be used for awareness programmes and prevention, particularly among the youth, as well as for home-based care for cancer patients.
External Local Hero Programme
Making heroes of our clients
Nedbank Foundation has created an opportunity for its clients to make a real difference in their communities by allowing them to nominate a cause close to their hearts to receive funding through the Nedbank Local Hero Programme. During 2007 the successful Nedbank staff Local Hero Programme was extended to existing and prospective Nedbank clients to encourage volunteerism among South Africans and extend Nedbank’s charitable reach even further into the communities in which it operates around the country.
Through the Local Hero Programme, Nedbank clients are able to make the bank aware of needs within their communities, many of which are often overlooked by traditional CSI initiatives. To date a total of R1,7 million has been distributed to a variety of community projects, including childcare, care of the elderly, HIV/Aids education and care for abused women and children as well as animal rehabilitation.
Any client of Nedbank can become a ‘local hero’ and apply for a R10 000 donation to the cause with which they are involved simply by completing and submitting an application form at any Nedbank branch or online at www.nedbanklocalheroes.co.za.
