The Sports Trust was established to help build active communities through the medium of sport. This it does through the provision of sporting equipment and the upgrading of facilities in outlying or previously disadvantaged communities. The trust also focuses on identifying talent among young sportsmen and sportswomen and nurturing that talent through coaching, training and support programmes.

The annual fundraising highlight is The Sports Trust Golf Challenge. Held on the day after the Nedbank Golf Challenge and sponsored by Nedbank and Sun International, this event raises more than R1 million each year for the trust.

Since its inception The Sports Trust has supported over 200 major sport development projects across a range of sporting codes. Through its various initiatives more than R40 million has been invested in support of sports development projects in South Africa.

  Sport Affinity donations

Since its inception The Nedbank Sport Affinity programme has donated more than R9 million to The Sports Trust. Donations in 2008 totalled nearly R1 million (2007: R857 530).

Projects of 2008 supported by the Nedbank Sport Affinity through its partnership with The Sports Trust include the following:

EQUIPMENT DONATIONS

During the year The Sports Trust made many donations of sporting equipment to a variety of clubs and schools such as:

  • the Society for the Care of the Mentally Handicapped in Gauteng, which received equipment that included soccer and netball kits, cricket and table tennis equipment, and a stopwatch for athletics;
  • the KgatelopeleAthletics Club, which received uniforms and running shoes; and
  • the Nchabeleng Primary School, which received soccer, cricket, rugby, netball, volleyball and athletics equipment.

In addition, the Sports Trust also saw to the upgrading of three tennis courts at Gauteng East Tennis Association’s premises in Benoni in the amount of R225 000, while the East Bank Recreation Centre in Alexandra received a financial boost of R250 000 to upgrade two combi courts at the centre. The combi courts allow members of the community to participate in sports such as tennis, basketball, netball and street soccer. The upgrade of the facility came as a result of a street soccer tournament that was set up to target the unemployed youth and provide recreational activities as an alternative to crime.

The Sports Trust and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund joined forces to provide sports equipment and sports to facilities in the Northern Cape. New sports facilities and clubhouses were established in Deben, Hopetown, Colesberg, Maruping and Vosburg. The equipment donated included heavy-duty soccer nets, scoreboards and pool tables.

GOLF DEVELOPMENT

The Sports Trust, in partnership with the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, donated golf clubs and equipment to help disadvantaged golfers from the Steve Tshwete Communities and the communities of Delmas, Emalahleni and Emakazeni, thereby enabling rising golfers in the regions to hone their talent and potential and to develop into better golfers.

The South African Golf Development Board has also received funding for golf attire, golf clubs and golf shoes for 300 young disadvantaged golfers.

BOXING DEVELOPMENT

The Umjindi Municipality in Barberton received a new state- of-the-art boxing ring, courtesy of The Sports Trust. Barberton has many boxers in the Siyadlala Mass Participation Programme and the new boxing ring will go a long way towards helping these aspirant world champions realise their goals.

The Soweto Boxing Organisation also received boxing equipment.

ATHLETICS DEVELOPMENT

The Sports Trust and the Murray & Roberts/WBHO Green Point Stadium joint-venture project supported athletics development by donating new equipment to the value of R200 000 to the Boland Athletics Pole-vaulting Academy. The donation included a trailer to transport the academy’s equipment to various competitions around South Africa.

CRICKET DEVELOPMENT

The Herbie Rose Indoor Cricket Centre in Kimberley received a new polyurethane flooring system courtesy of The Sports Trust. The floor was fitted with cricket wickets in order to the Griqualand West Cricket Board to develop a suitable facility for cricket. The facility will also be utilised by community for functions and school meetings.
