NEDBANK GROUP SPONSORSHIPS

Although the primary role of Nedbank Group Sponsorships is to provide a platform to profile the Nedbank brand, the vast majority of selected sponsorships have a strongly developmental aspect that aligns them with the bank’s strategic aspiration to lead as a corporate citizen. Some of our more prominent sponsorships include:

GOLF

By sponsoring golfing events, Nedbank Group not only grows brand awareness among our client base and our target market, but also contributes tangibly to the development of the sport among women and the previously disadvantaged. Golf sponsorships include:
  • The Sports Trust Golf Challenge – a joint initiative between Nedbank Group and Sun International that raises around R1 million in aid of sport development every year. It is played the day after the Nedbank Golf Challenge. To date over R10 million has been raised through this event in aid of The Sports Trust.
  • The Nedbank Affinity Cup – forms part of the Sunshine Tour and is played on the Lost City Golf Course three days prior to the start of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Nedbank donates an annual amount equal to the Affinity Cup winner’s prizemoney to a selected golf-related development project.

SPORT FOR THE DISABLED

Nedbank Group’s association with sport for the disabled dates back to 1992. The highlights of this sponsorship area are undoubtedly the annual Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled and our support of the SA Paralympic Team. 2009 marked Nedbank Group’s 15th year as a sponsor of the SA Paralympic Team and we have committed to supporting the team through to the London Paralympic Games in 2012.

Nedbank Group’s current sport-for-the-disabled portfolio includes:
  • Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled.
  • Nedbank Technical Excellence and Administration Programme.
  • Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open.
  • Partner to the SA Paralympic Team.

Road running

Road running is one of South Africa’s most accessible sports and affords Nedbank Group a platform to reach and support diverse participants in mass participation events. In 2009 Nedbank’s presence in the road running fraternity was further enhanced through the creation of the Nedbank Running Clubs in all 11 provinces. Of the 13 current clubs, two are identified as developmental clubs while the balance strive to develop South African road running in general and encourage participation in the sport by young athletes, families and, where possible, athletes with disabilities. The contractual sponsorship of the ASA/Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series ended in 2009. Nedbank remains a proud sponsor of the Comrades Marathon.

SOCCER

2009 was the second year of Nedbank Group’s five-year Nedbank Cup sponsorship agreement with the SA Premier League. This is the only cup competition that addresses football development through the inclusion of professional and amateur teams in a single tournament.

1. Fans celebrate the launch of the 2009 Nedbank Cup.

2. Proudly holding aloft the Nedbank Cup are 2008 winners,
    Mamelodi Sundowns.

THE BUSINESSWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Over the past nine years Nedbank’s sponsorship of the Business Women’s Association has demonstrated the bank’s commitment to the development of women and the role that awards of this nature play in raising the profile of women business achievers.

CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD

The sponsorship of the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) affords the group hospitality opportunities while enabling us to offer financial assistance to workers and their families on wine estates through the Nedbank Group CWG Development Trust in conjunction with the Nedbank Foundation. As part of an ongoing commitment to the guild, a donation of R100 000 was made to the Development Trust in 2009.

THE NEDBANK AND OLD MUTUAL BUDGET SPEECH COMPETITION

Run in close cooperation with the Department of Finance, this competition encourages economic excellence in South Africa by promoting sustainable economic development, developing future leaders in economics, making young South Africans excited about economics as a subject and career path, and providing opportunities for economics students to make contact with key players in the financial world.

BRAND AMBASSADORS

While Nedbank Group’s sponsorship policy does not allow for the financial support of specific individuals, we have developed a working relationship with a number of brand ambassadors. In 2009 our Nedbank brand ambassadors appeared at various roadshows, functions and prizegivings, as well as other events, and were featured in advertising campaigns.

1. Nedbank brand ambassador, Oscar Pistorius, appears on the 2009     cover of a leaflet, which forms part of a communication campaign     sponsored by Nedbank in the buildup to the 2012 London Paralympic     Games.

2. 2009 Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open champion, Iglin Grobbelaar,     receives his trophy from Bernadette Briglin (Head: Nedbank Group     Advertising and Marketing Communication).
