Children’s Green, Sport and Arts Affinities

In 1990 Nedbank became a pioneer in mutual-benefit marketing in South Africa with the establishment of its innovative Nedbank Affinity programme. Since then Nedbank has donated more than R120 million to over 1 000 worthy causes.

 

2008 HIGHLIGHTS AND HAPPENINGS

• During the year under review Nedbank added nearly 140 000 new and existing clients to the Nedbank Affinity programme, which exceeded the growth targeted for 2008.
  
• Despite the difficult economic times, the total amount donated to the various affinity trusts grew by 17% in 2008 to R11 323 million (2007: R9,6 million).

SUSTAINABILITY GOALS 2009

• Grow donations to the various trusts and funds to R12 million in 2009.

THE NEDBANK AFFINITY PROGRAMME

Offering support to a range of community and environmental causes, the Nedbank Affinity programme comprises the following four affinities:

The Nedbank Children’s Affinity – supports needy children in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

The Nedbank Green Affinity – supports conservation and the environment through contributions to The Green Trust.

The Nedbank Sport Affinity – promotes sport development in partnership with The Sports Trust.

The Nedbank Arts Affinity – enhances and preserves South Africa’s cultural heritage through the Arts & Culture Trust.

Nedbank clients are given the opportunity to support the affinity of their choice by opening an affinity-linked savings account, credit card, or cheque account, or taking out short- term insurance with Nedbank.

Depending on the product chosen, Nedbank then donates a percentage of the client’s spend or a fixed amount per transaction to the affinity he or she supports.

These donations are not at the clients’ expense, but are made by way of Nedbank sacrificing a portion of its profit margin on the products concerned. The more a client uses his or her affinity products, the more Nedbank donates to the relevant affinity.

Product	Donation mechanism
Credit card	A percentage of every purchase is donated to the trust/fund, at no cost to the client.
Cheque card	A fixed amount is donated per purchase transaction, at no cost to the client.
Savings account	On opening this account, a donation is made to the trust/fund. A further donation is based on the daily credit balance. All at no cost to the client.
Chequebook	When a new chequebook is ordered, a donation is made to the trust/fund, at no cost to the client.
MyCover Platinum	When a MyCover Platinum short-term insurance policy is taken out, a donation is made to The Green Trust, at no cost to the client.
